Parents are their children’s first role model in life, witnessing domestic violence as the victim or perpetrator can make a child believe that is the norm and have them believe what is happening is okay. It has been proven that men who witnessed their fathers abusing their mothers are at greater risk of abusing their wives when they get older. Studies have also shown that those who witness and experience abuse as children are more likely to be in abusive relationships when they get older as the abuser or the victim. Domestic violence around children does not only affect their childhood, it shapes who they become as a whole and often aids the kind of person they will become. Object relations theory suggest that as humans we are all†¦show more content†¦Before partner violence became a crime, it was very common for men to punish their wives physically. This may include the mother wanting control of the family or the father wanting control and power, which is seen more often in family dynamics. To obtain this control, dominant members of the family use force, threats or physical abuse to gain the respect and compliance from the less dominant members, such as children. The abuser then aims to gain control of the way the family members think and feel. The abuser turns to intimidation, coercion and economic abuse to keep control. The victims, often the children, learn to respond to the intimidation through withdrawal from the family dynamic. This results in a child’s development. The theories explained above influence the thoughts and opinions of domestic violence. The approach to an issue as such must be appropriate to decrease the problem as a whole. The social learning theory helps me understand that the intervention for the child must display positivity to help the child understand the appropriate interactions. With children imitating the behaviors of their caregivers as role models, witnessing domestic violence may have instilled thoughts in their minds that proves to them it is okay. The job of the social worker would be to give them the help necessary to reevaluate the way they have perceived the image from their young ages.
